An Overview of the CCPA - August 2020

  • Technology

Each day, individual and business data usage is rapidly increasing due to the reliance on technology, as well as new, emerging data trends. Rampant data production and the recent implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has caused a shift in thinking around data protection for consumers. As a result, new and amended data security laws have recently surfaced in the United States, by way of California. Quickly leading the U.S. in consumer data protections, California passed two new pieces of legislation specifically dealing with consumer privacy and data security standards in 2018. Then, in early 2019, California also introduced a bill seeking to amend its data breach notification statue to address gaps in the law. As of 2020, all three pieces of legislation went into effect.
